SHILLONG, Nov 11: Hemmed with inadequate security forces and increasing militant activities, the Meghalaya Government has pleaded with the Centre for additional paramilitary forces, modernisation and hi-tech training for its police force to enable it to effectively tackle insurgency related activities in the State.
According to a status paper presented by the State government to the Centre north-eastern based insurgent groups like the NSCN, ULFA, BLTP, KYKL and UNLF are using Shillong as their meeting place as well as for shelter. The cosmopolitan nature of Shillong provides them with a cover for total anonymity while these outfits indulge in various antinational activities.
It reminded the Centre that these insurgent outfits finds it convenient to slip to their camps in Bangladesh due to its proximity with Meghalaya. It recalled that two years back Meghalaya police had arrested five top NSCN members including its self styled Home Minister A Shimray and Home Secretary from Shillong.
Making a strong casefor sanctioning of more funds and additional para-military forces to Meghalaa by the Central government, the status paper informs that these insurgent groups had infiltrated and established camps in remote area of Meghalaya after the Bangladesh government had closed it down on their soil. Meghalaya government feels that to effectively tackle the insurgency problem in the State minimum of five battalions of police and central para-military forces is required. At present the State has two Armed Police battalions aided by seven companies of CRPF. This accounts for only sixty per cent of its requirement.
