Ice Age diplomacy
Indian and Pakistani diplomats are more alike than they would care to admit. So alike, in fact, that they deserve each other. The much-hyped talking shop, packaged as a Composite Dialogue between the two nations, concluded in Delhi on Saturday with very little to account for, apart from a bus service between Delhi and Lahore.

Desperately yours
This year's Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial lecture was an occasion for some mutual Congress-CPI(M) flattery and the hoisting of political signals. It was also something more. Jyoti Basu was put on the same pedestal as B.C. Roy and the Congress praised for its open-mindedness. The possibility of new political alignments was on many minds.

Spelling it out
Perhaps nothing ever takes such a ruthless bashing in our hands as English spelling - and often with hilarious results. Ignorance and, to a lesser extent, carelessness are usually the culprits.
