TEL AVIV, Dec 17: Israel would freeze its US-brokered peace deal with the Palestinians if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu takes the country to an early election, a senior government official said today.``I don't think anyone expects us to continue with implementation of the agreement during an election period,'' the official told reporters after Netanyahu announced he would put his peace policies before the voters if parliament failed to back them next Monday.
There was talk in parliament earlier today of a possible national election at the end of March, or sometime in May or June, to avoid scheduling conflicts with Jewish and Israeli holidays.
Political sources had quoted Israeli Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon as saying earlier in the week that an election could put the peace deal -- already suspended by Netanyahu over alleged Palestinian violations -- on hold for six months.
