Speak, madam, speak
Pollsters and pundits have begun talking in awed tones of the emergence of Sonia Gandhi as the single most important factor that is likely to determine the course of 1999. Trendy tears and natty NGOs

Euro arrives
The euro equals one Ecu (a basket of participating Euroland currencies and the pound, used to calculate EU budgets). When the Euro comes into existence at 00.00 hrs on January 1, 1999, it will be traded at the equivalent value of the Ecu at that moment.
