Collector takes over Gymkhana
The Collector has taken over the land along with the building of Princess Victoria Merry (PVM) Gymkhana, situated opposite Cooperage in south Mumbai. The Collector has further stated that in other cases also, where the lease has expired, the leased property would be taken over by the government, adding that this was for the first time where such action has been taken. The land was given to PVM Gymkhana in the year 1939 on the government lease for the period of 60 years, Collector Sanjay Chahande said in an official statement today. The Mumbai Junior College Teachers' Union will go on a five-day long hunger strike from today to reiterate their demands for revised pay scales at Azad Maidan. Junior college teachers, who rejected the Sukhtankar panel recommendations on the Fifth Pay Commission, have been on strike since Dec 10. Workers at Oswal Petrochemicals have locked horns with their management over the latter's move to transfer its employees en masse from its Chembur unit which has been under lock-out since December 16, 1998. In the second round of transfers, orders for which were issued in first week of December, six supervisory staff barely missed being moved to the company's other units when the management withdrew the orders within half an hour.
