ZURICH, JAN 3: FIFA president Sepp Blatter has called for the World Cup finals to be staged every two years.
``I want a football World Championship every two years. Then the national teams will get the rankings they deserve,'' Blatter said in an interview published in the mass circulation Sunday newspaper Sonntags Blick.
``I'm calling for a clear declaration: do we want national teams or do we only want club football?''
Blatter said he favoured holding regional or continental championships during every uneven year and the world cup every second year.
The most successful teams in the continental championships would qualify for the World Cup.
``The current four-year rotation is outdated. It comes from the thirties (1930s) when the teams still travelled from continent to continent by ship,'' Blatter said.
