CENTURION (SOUTH AFRICA), JAN 15: Wicket-keeper Mark Boucher, who scored a century, and Jacques Kallis with his fourth half century of the series, rescued South Africa after the West Indies pace attack rocked the home side on the opening day of the fifth and final Test at Centurion Park today.

The duo came together when South Africa were struggling at 123 for six but their seventh wicket association of 93 set South Africa on the road to recovery. Kallis was snapped up for 83 while Boucher scored exactly 100 as South African lower order once again came good.

Brian Lara put the South Africans in to bat on a responsive pitch. Kallis, disciplined but positive, went to the wicket when Gary Kirsten gloved the second ball of the match, delivered by Courtney Walsh, to wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs.

His only serious error came on 27 when he turned a Mervyn Dillon delivery solidly to Philo Wallace at short leg. Wallace spilled what would have been a stunning catch and the resultant overthrow by Reon King sped to theboundary, earning Kallis five runs in all.

Kallis's half-century came up after 195 minutes in which he faced 112 balls and hit three fours and a six.

South Africa needed his diligence in the opening session a West Indies finally lived up to their reputation for quality pace bowling, reducing the home side to 86 for four at lunch.

Herschelle Gibbs went in the fifth over when he pushed forward to a ball from Walsh and was brilliantly caught by Floyd Reifer diving forward at third slip for two.

South Africa lost their third wicket three overs later when Daryll Cullinan edged a delivery from Nixon McLean onto his pad and to Wallace at short leg.

A fourth-wicket partnership of 47 between Kallis and captain Hansie Cronje seemed to stabilise the innings, but 20 minutes before lunch Cronje was caught behind down the legside in Dillon's first over.

The first casualty of the second session was Jonty Rhodes, who attempted to pull a wide delivery from Dillon and skied it to Reon King at mid-on to be out for24 and end a fifth-wicket partnership of 33.

Shaun Pollock scored 13 but then edged a ball from Walsh to Lara at first slip.

Walsh was the most effective bowler, taking three for 58.
