A dangerous spiral
All those who saw Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi fumbling for a reaction to the vandalism at the BCCI office in Mumbai on Monday will know that his priorities are downright wrong. Pressed repeatedly by newspersons to make a statement, he refused to condemn the criminals and sought refuge in ignorance.

While some of us are still in the process of wishing each other a happy new year, Anjana Mishra has been gang raped in Cuttack. Her only crime was that she decided to file a complaint against Inderjeet Roy, who was then the advocate general of Orissa, appointed by Chief Minister J.B. Patnaik.
Disabled in the court of justice
Javed Abidi, an orthopaedically handicapped person, knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court for the effective implementation of the Persons With Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995. The apex court ignored the most crucial parts of the Act and handed over the disabled to a bureaucratic machinery without ensuring that the machinery will actually deliver.
