CHANDIGARH, Jan 20: While the local MP Satya Pal Jain has demanded early grant of licences to roadside vendors, the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee has sought transparency in the grant of licenses to them.Jain, in a statement, said here today that all such roadside workers should not be harassed by removing their material. Raising the issue of their challaning by the Administration officials, he has sought a reduction in fine. Jain also demanded that efforts be made to accomodate the remaining vendors who do not figure in the survey conducted for the grant of licences to them.Meanwhile, the CTCC spokesman Sunil Parti separately said the Administration must declare the list of all the phari wallas prior to the issuance of licenses to them.
He alleged irregularities had been reported in the survey of footpath vendors, recently conducted at the instance of Chandigarh Administration, and it had come to the notice of the party that many names had been included and excluded for monetary considerations.
An official in the Estate Office, when contacted, said," The survey of phariwallas in Chandigarh has just been accomplished and the Estate office would adopt total transparency in the process of granting licences whenever it starts." He said the authorities were, however, facing difficulty in finalising things as many people, who do not figure in the survey list, have been claiming the benefit on the plea that their names were left out as they were not present on the spot at the time of the survey.
