CHANDIGARH, Jan 20: As many as 165 persons were elected as the "added members" to various faculties of the Panjab University syndicate in the elections held here yesterday.The Deepak Manmohan Singh-Rajinder Deepa group claiming victory, stated that they had won majority of the seats in the elections. A prominent member of the group and university fellow, Charanjit Chawla said 95 of the elected members owed allegiance to their group.
However, the leader of the rival group, Gopal Krishan Chatrath stated that 90 members owed allegiance to their group. He said the opposite group was adding neutral members to inflate its claims. The election of the "added members" is significant as these members participate in the senate elections and determine its composition. Earlier, 11 members were declared elected unopposed from Departments of Pharmaceutical, Engineering and Technology, Dairying and Agriculture. The elections to the remaining seats in the faculty of Arts, Science, Law, Medical Science, Business Management and Commerce, Design and Fine Arts, Education and Language were held today. All the six members who had filed nominations from S.D. College, Sector 32 were declared elected. Meanwhile, some members of the senate have filed a petition with the Registrar alleging irregularities in the filling of some nominations.
