Id-ul-Fitr celebrated with fervour in Vadodara

VADODARA, Jan 20: Id-ul-fitr was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in almost all parts of the district on Wednesday. A number of buildings were decorated even as several localities in the interiors of the walled city saw the unusual hustle bustle of children and elders in their best attire since Tuesday night.

Since the festival marks the end of 30 days of fast, shopping, decoration of prominent buildings had began from Tuesday night itself. Devotional songs were played on sound systems in several areas of the city.

More than 30,000 Muslims gathered at the main prayer ground (Pratap Nagar Idgah) where Khatib Anwarullah Khan Sahib, the shahar Khateeb led the prayers and later addressed the gathering. Highlighting the religious importance of the festival -- id-sevinyan or mithi (sweet) id -- he exhorted members of the community to spread the message of brotherhood in the society. Several senior offficals and political leaders, including Gujarat Minority Board Chairman Gani Qureshi, were present on the occasion.

Idgahs at Fatehgunj, Jama Masjid, Mandvi and at Nava Yard, Kadak bazar, Jetalpur, Akota, Tandalja, Raopura, Nagarwada, Wadi, Panigate, Fatehpura, Yakutpura, Bavamanpura, Memon colony, Vohra colony and Bahar colony areas were also decorated with paper festoons, electric lights and decorative pandals.

Special functions to mark the celebrations were also held in Chhani, Makarpura, Sayajipura, Tarsali, Kisanagar, Kelanpur, Dhaniyavi areas.
