North Zone win opening match

CHANDIGARH, Jan 24: North Zone began their campaign on a promising note, winning their opening match in the Food Corporation of India Inter-Zonal cricket tournament which got underway here today. North Zone scored a comfortable 10 wickets win over South Zone.

For North Zone Naveen Negi (37 not out) and Aminder Dhillon (30 not out) achieved the target of 70 runs in 15 overs.

South Zone were back to the pavilion for 69 runs.

In another match, Head Quarters defeated last year's winner East Zone by 43 runs.

West Zone got the better of North East Zone by 77 runs in the last match of the day. The matches are being played at three venues --PCA Stadium, SAS Nagar, Sector 16 Cricket Stadium and Police Lines in Sector 26.

WZ: 224 for in in 40 overs (Saket Adhikari 57, Sidharth 42, Rohan 31, D Roy 2 for 41); NEZ: 147 for 8 in 40 overs (Bachan Singh 34, Gulrez Ali 31, Anil 2 for 8).
HQ: 111 in 40 overs ( Sanjeev 47, S Lahri 6 for 16, Jaideep Mukerjee 2 for 19, Mazumdar 2 for 23); East Zone: 68 in 21.4 overs (Jaideep Mukerjee 23, S Mukerjee 21, S Chopra 3 for 18, Bal Krishan 3 for 9).
SZ: 69 for 8 (Akash Malhotra 4 for 9, Devashish 2 for 2); NZ: 70 (Naveen Negi 37 n.o., Aminder Dhillon 30 n.o).

Raghav shines
An all round performance by Raghav (34 and 2 for 11) enabled St Stephen's School-45 to beat Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar by four wickets in the ICSE Inter-School cricket tournament being held at St Xavier's School in Sector 44.

YPS won the toss and elected to bat. The team scored 104 for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 25 overs.

In reply, St Stephen's School got the winning total in 13th over, losing six wickets. Raghav with 34 runs top scored for the winners.

Next match of the meet will be played on January 30, between St Xavier's School and Tender Heart School-33.

Brief Scores: St Stephen's School-45: 105 in 6 for 13.2 overs (Raghav 34, Gaurav 9, Prashant Garcha 4 for 17); YPS: 104 for 9 (Sunny 33, Raghav 2 for 11, Varun 2 for 13, Sunny 2 for 18).
