Agreement to promote sports at DDCA

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE  
NEW DELHI, February 3: The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) and Dharampal Premchand Ltd (owners of Baba brand) have signed an agreement to promote sports in the country. The agreement specifies that the Pavilion end at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground will be named Baba End, which will be valid for 10 years. It will be renewed with mutual consent. The company will spend about Rs 70 lakh on its new project.

Speaking to newspersons here today, DDCA sports secretary Sunil Dev said the ``funds received from the tie-up would be utilised for creating better services and facilities at the stadium.''

R Sujan, chief executive of the sponsors, disclosed that the company had identified other sports (chess, shooting, swimming) to push talent in a similar manner. he said the company was planning to spend Rs one crore during the year on sports promotion.

Cricketer Kirti Azad lauded the efforts of the sponsors in promoting sport. ``Indian sport will get a better footing to compete internationally,'' he said.

Master Team Bridge
The Life Master Team Championships for the P.C. Goenka Trophy and the National Masters pair event for the G.K. Sundaram Trophy will be held at the Boat Club, Hyderabad from February 17 to 19.

According to the president of the Bridge Federation of India, Y Kamalkar Rao, two teams from these events will qualify for the national selection trials for the Bermuda Bowl to be held at Mumbai in March. The Bermuda Bowl, the symbol of supremacy in bridge, will be held at Bermuda in January 2000 to commemorate the 50th year of the championships. India have qualified twice but have failed to qualify from the league into the quarterfinals on both occasions.
