CHANDIGARH, Feb 21: A mushaira was organised on the occasion of Multan Day celebrations at the DAV College, Sector 10 by the Federation of Migrant Groups from North-Western India, now Pakistan.
As many as 25 poets from Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh participated in the mushaira.
The Day, dedicated to tercentenary of Khalsa, was aimed at promoting Punjabi culture with specific focus on Multani heritage. The event was inaugurated by Punjab Minister for Local Government Balramji Dass Tandon. Saraiki or Multani is spoken in the Bahawalpur area and Multan division in the Pakistani province of Punjab and also by the migrants from these areas.
Addressing the audience, M.L. Hasija, Director Language Department, Punjab said, "The rich heritage of Saraiki is vanishing as the migrants from Multan and surrounding areas are scattered in different parts of Punjab and Haryana and there is lack of communication. The need is to promote the heritage." Speaking on the occasion, Balramji Dass Tandon said the dialect is part of Punjabi culture and preservation and promotion of Saraiki would ensure harmony among the people of East and West Punjab.
