Anand draws opener

linares, Feb 22: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw by Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine in the first-round of the 16th Linares chess tournament, here, yesterday.

England's Michael Adams defeated Peter Leko (Hungary) to go into the lead after the first-round. The other two games between Kasparov-Svidler and Kramnik-Topalov in this eight man league were drawn. Today, Anand clashes with Leko with white pieces.

Results (First-round): V Anand (India) drew V Ivanchuk (Ukraine), G Kasparov (Rus) drew P Svidler (Rus); V Kramnik (Rus) drew V Topalov (Bul); M Adams (Eng) bt P Leko (Hun).

Kunte loses Dhaka: India's International Master Abhijit Kunte lost to Bangladesh Grandmaster Niaz Murshed in the 4th round of the United Insurance Grandmaster chess tournament today. Playing black, Kunte (2) employed Nimzo Indian Defence and sacrificed a pawn on the 10th move but Niaz played accurately to win after 85 moves. Bangladesh's IM Abdullah Al-Rakib, British GM Nigel Short and GM Yuri Sulaman shared thetop position with three points.
