PUNE, Feb 22: Unseeded Rohan Dalvi of Pune saved four match points in the tie-breaker to hand a shock defeat to citymate and fourth seeded Pratik Sharma 9-8 (11-9) in the closely fought boys under-16 first round match of the Hero Honda-MSLTA Masters junior tennis tournament at PYC Hindu Gymkhana courts, here.Joining Rohan in the list of day's upset winners were Mehul Kenia of Kolhapur (U-12) and Tejas Chaukulkar of Pune (U-10). Fourth seed Ayush Wadhwan (Mumbai) and No. 3 Marlon Coelho (Mumbai) were at the receiving end, conceding a 1-9 and 4-9 defeat respectively.
Going by Rohan's overall play today, there would not have been the introduction of tie-breaker in the first place, had he not panicked at the crucial moments. He was well on the way to grabbing the tie leading 7-4 at one stage. However, instead of maintaining his cool, in a hurry to finish off the points, Rohan went for early winners and at times misjudged the angle shots as well.
However, it was Rohan's sheer luck, as Pratik, despite dectating terms many a times, lacked the killer's approach.
Taking all his chances, Pratik levelled 7-7 and thereafter what followed was a thrilling encounter, where both ran neck-to-neck till the deciding point in tie-breaker.
But this was not the end to Rohan's panic. The 11th standard commerce student from BMCC, though leading 5-2 in the tie-breaker, committed the same mistakes, squandering the lead once again. Pratik utilised the opportunity to its full, bridging the gap by pocketing four points in a row. At match point 6-5, Pratik bungled the chance, hitting a wide cross-court return to Rohan's low volley. Rohan later saved three more match points, before finishing the match with a backhand top spin return, which Pratik found difficult to put inside the side line, across the net.
