Shaan & Amrita
Little songbird
She'S only 14, but this budding singer is no shy girl. Delhi-ite Sunidhi Chauhan, winner of the Lata Mangeshkar Trophy for 1996 on the Meri Awaaz Suno show, got her first break when she sang for the film Shashtra.A regular professional in the Bollywood music scene, she is taking time off from her Std. IX studies. Now based in Mumbai, she's learning light Hindustani music from guru Gautam Mukherjee.
``I learnt music singing Lataji's songs since I was five. And now I will be singing for Ram Gopal Verma's film Mast, which I am really looking forward to,'' says the bubbly teenager. She's also fond of Western music, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion being favourites. And studies will always take a backseat. ``I'll try and finish graduation,'' she says, which is a long way off.
Euphoric indeed!
``Benny plays the keyboards, Gaurav and Hitesh play the guitars, Chris is the drummer, DJ is on the bass and I play the fool,'' says Palash (Polly), lead singer of Euphoria, that will perform at the Contessa Select Show, Ganga Retreat, Nagar Road, on March 2.
A doctor-cum-singer, Palash expressed the band's views on music and their interesting videos. ``At present, we are working on `Hindrock', which is even more difficult than singing English rock, believe me. Hindi rock cannot sound raw and power-packed like English, it's too sweet a language,'' adds Palash, who says their music is experimental and fun, as is evident from their album.
``Our music has become popular due to the variety we have offered in our album - jazz, folk and rock. We play Hindi rock because we want to be original.''
The catchy lyrics of the beautifully-shot Dhoom Pichuk made the group famous. ``We want to reach out to people and their hearts, and so far, our efforts are proving fruitful,'' says the group members, who will present their numbers at the Holi celebrations, where event manager Ashish Bhuyan has ``arranged for a rain dance, lots of food and fun and great music.'' Happy Holi!
In toon town
They didn't come wearing floppy noses or long ears but they sure had as much fun as the cartoon characters seem to have on their shows. With `Cartoons' being the theme for last week's freaky Friday at Totem Pole, you had the young and happening crowd trooping and then proceeding to have a great time, dancing amidst cartoon cut-outs and masked attendants. Guess it's not just kids that Bugs Bunny or Asterix can put in a good mood.
Tungzsten checks in
Here's another music album on the scene - this one from Pune. City-based Chords India Lt. launched its debut music album, Tungzsten, as well as a music video of the album, titled Ballad of Colours, at a function at the Residency Club recently. The music video was released by industrialist Baba Kalyani while the album was released by president, MCCI, Prataprao Pawar.
The digitally-recorded self-titled album contains a musical medley of ballads, hard rock, rock `n' roll, acoustic and semi-acoustic, African rock and reggae. The album features 19 songs sung and written by Sanjay Subramanium, while Shital Chandra Kulkarni, director, Chords India Ltd., is also its lead guitarist and music composer. `` We want our music to cross all age barriers.'' says Kulkarni.
