A musical treat from Kyrghyzstan

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Chandigarh, March 12: Karamoldo Orozov the 60-member folk orchestra, established in the 1960s is the largest in Kyrghyzstan. Today, only one-fourth of the group, all of them state awardees, was here to perform at the Tagore Theatre.

But the small number in no way dulled the impact of their brilliant performance. All the symphonies fitted the mood of spring, they were short, sprightly, spirited, fresh and energetic. Traditional classical instruments, mostly string, all of them made by master craftsmen, an occupation which is at least three generations old, comprised the orchestra. One of the key instruments was `Komuz' and had a distinctive sound.

The orchestra had men and women dressed in their national dress, traditional embroidered velvets, with the ladies adorning intricate caps with handsome feathers. The significance of the feathers, according to a member of the group is, "the feathers are of a mountain eagle and represent good omen."

For Chandigarh, the members had produced a special concert, which had instrumental folk music, folk songs and performances of mouth instrument, Temeroschomus. The solo performances, mostly of folk love songs, by lead singers had almost an opera like quality attached to them and thus appealed in spite of the language barrier.

The key presentation of the programme was the special production of Alisha's Made In India done in Hindi. The music accompanied was identical in spite of the fact that traditional instruments had been used. The audience loved each moment of the song and the effort was rewarded by a thunderous applause.

The orchestra has also performed in the USA, Canada, Hungary and Denmark.
