CAIRO, MARCH 19: Libya today said it will hand over the two suspects in the 1988 bombing of an American airplane over Lockerbie, Scotland, to the United Nations by April 6. The Libyan decision was announced by South African President Nelson Mandela, who is currently in Libya.
Mandela, Saudi Arabian King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah were responsible for Libyan leader Muammar Gadaffi's decision to hand over the suspects involved in the bombing. The UN imposed sanctions on Libya in 1992 in a bid to force Tripoli to hand over the suspects for trial either in the US or Britain. But Libya had refused on the ground that the trial would be biased. Last year, Tripoli agreed to have a trial in The Netherlands conducted by a Scottish court. However, Libya dithered, demanding assurances for the safety of its two nationals.
