Two die in road mishaps
Jalandhar: Sudesh Kumari, 35, a resident of a village in Talwara area of Hoshiarpur district, was run over and killed by a train between the Bhogpur-Kala Bakra on the Jalandhar-Pathankot section yesterday, police sources said today. In a separate case, Sukhjit Singh, 25, was fatally injured when he fell from a diesel multiple unit at the local railway station last evening. He died shortly after hospitalisation. Meanwhile, Kashmir singh, 27, was found hanging from a ceiling in the house of his parents-in-law in Wadala village near here yesterday.

Gesture to guests from Pakistan
Chandigarh: As a goodwill gesture towards the visiting Pakistan cricket team and viewers from across the border, the Punjab government has made a special offer, according to Capatain Narinder Singh, managing director of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC). Each visitor from Pakistan was entitled to avail a free gift coupon of Rs 500 to make purchases from ``Phulkari,'' a PSIEC outlet in sector 17. J.S.Randhawa, estate officer cum manager emporiums, disclosed that the outlet had been provided with a wide variety of Punjabi suits, dupattas, handicrafts, phulkaris and other items depicting our heritage.

Dhir elected Bar body president
Hoshiarpur: R.P. Dhir was today elected president of the District Bar Association for the second consecutive year. He secured 137 votes against S.S. Parmar who got 71 votes.

`Give safai karamcharis their due'
Nawanshahr: Sardeep Singh, member, National Commission for Safai Karamchari, while presiding over a meeting of the district officials here yesterday, stressed the need to safeguard the interests of the safai karamcharis. According to an official release issued here, he said that all facilities due to these karamcharis should be granted to them. Sardeep added that the National Commission too was taking effective steps to safeguard their interests. Pritam Singh Johal, ADC, Nawanshahr and Ved Parkash, President, also addressed the meeting.

Grant distributed to panchayats
Nawanshahr: The Deputy Commissioner Roshan Sankaria distributed cheques worth Rs 12 lakh as award money to 12 panchayats of two blocks for their unanimous selection by their respective villages. According to an official release issued here, the money was distributed during a `Vikas samagam' organised yesterday by the administration in the historic Baradari here. He said that those panchayats which show good results in the spread of literary would be given a special award of Rs 1 lakh each.

UGC refresher course organised
Patiala: A University Grants Commission (UGC) refresher course organised by the Department of Geography in Punjabi University concluded on the campus here today. About 25 participants from various states participated in the course. They surveyed village Noorkheri to estimate the agricultural indebtedness among the farmers. Dr B.S. Bhatia, Dean Academic Affairs, presided over the valedictory function.

Over 1 lakh turn up for filing return
Ludhiana: Over one lakh city residents filled up their 2-C forms during the second successive scheme of the Income Tax department to widen the tax net, which came to a close on March 31. K.K. Kapila, Commissioner IT, highlighted that the number is likely to be the highest among the 35 towns and cities where the scheme was launched last year. Meanwhile, people encountered problems while submitting their challans at the nationalised banks, the day being the non-transaction day of banks at the end of the current financial year.

Wheat procurement
Moga: The district administration has completed the arrangements for the procurement of wheat and set up 60 purchase centres as compared to 59 last year. This was announced here last evening by the Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Kang after reviewing the arrangements with the senior officers of the procurement agencies. He said that the market committees of Moga, Badhnikalan, Baghapurana and Nihalsinghwala have also completed all the arrangements of drinking water, lighting, and sheds.

Resignation demanded
Amritsar: Raj Kumar, General Secretary of Punjab Pradesh Congress, today asked the BJP leadership in the state to withdraw their ministers from the Badal government in wake of serious allegations levelled by state BJP president Daya Singh Sodhi of a Rs 20 crore racket in the auction of liquor vends. In a press release issued here, he said that Sodhi had claimed to have documentary evidence of the racket in his possession. He demanded that Sodhi should make the evidence public and expose the misdeeds of the Badal government.

Call to boycott varsity exams
Abohar: The non-teaching staff of D.A.V. College, Gopi Chand Arya Mahila College and D.A.V. College of Education observed a complete strike today and organised a rally. While addressing the rally, the speakers highlighted that none of the employees would be available for the university examinations. They stressed that the examinations would be boycotted on account of the unfair treatment doled out by the state government. The protestors threatened that their agitation would continue until their demand were accepted. Their demands include new grades, gratuity and pension.

Annual credit plan released
Gurdaspur: The Deputy Commissioner S.K. Sandhu released the annual credit plan of the district for 1999-2000 during a function held here today. He said that banks in the district would provide credit to the tune of Rs 229.34 crore under priority sector, which is higher by 32 per cent as compared to last year. He added that Rs 136.77 crore, Rs 52.74 crore and Rs 39.84 crore would be made available to agriculture, small scale industry and tertiary sector respectively during the year.

Mittal to lead March to Dwarka
Chandigarh: Punjab Food and Supplies Minister Madan Mohan Mittal today left for Dwarka in Gujarat to lead a Khalsa Tercentenary March which will reach Kiratpur Sahib after 8 days of journey. According to a press release, the devotees will pass through Ahmedabad, Mount Abu, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Ganganagar, Muktsar and Ludhiana to reach Kiratpur Sahib.
