MUMBAI, April 7: Two gangsters were killed in encounters with the police in separate incidents today. Santosh Shetty, a member of the Manchekar gang was shot dead by the Kalyan police at Lokgram in Kalyan (east) at 4.10 pm.When trapped by the Anti-Extortion Cell and asked to surrender he flung a chopper on one of the constables, Uttam Bhosale, who was injured. The cops retaliated by opening fire, killing Shetty on the spot. Bhosale has been admitted to the Rukmini hospital.
At around 7.45 pm, Mangesh Dhotre of the Chhota Shakeel gang was killed in an encounter with the police near Nanavati Hospital at Santacruz (west). An Anti-Extortion Cell (north-west) squad trapped and shot dead Dhotre when he refused to surrender.
Dhotre was one of the main shooters of the Shakeel gang and active in the northern suburbs, said Additional Commissioner of Police (north-west) Rakesh Maria adding that Dhotre was the main shooter in the killing of hotelier's association president Ramnath Payade at Borivli in1997.
