Dragomir halted the ninth-seeded Kournikova's run on the Amelia Island clay by scoring a 6-3, 7-5 victory that set up a final against second seed Monica Seles, who annihilated former champion Conchita Martinez 6-0, 6-1.

The 38th-ranked Dragomir, owner of four career WTA Tour titles, became only the second unseeded player in the tournament's 20-year history to reach the final, joining Carling Bassett, who went on to lose to Chris Evert in 1983.
