Chasing the home side's modest 209 all out, the Australians subsided to 165 all out in 41.5 overs yesterday.

Bryan, 28, was something of a surprise selection in the West Indies initial World Cup squad last month. But he tore through Australia's much-vaunted middle-order to finish with record figures by a West Indian on ODI debut.

The Australians collapsed in the face of accurate seam bowling from Bryan and Mervyn Dillon and some dazzling West Indian fielding which bore no resemblance to the dispirited display which had led to the 6-1 loss in their previous one-day series against South Africa.

After Bryan coaxed captain Steve Waugh (10) to drag a ball back on to his stumps in 26th over, the Australians lost a further three wickets in the space oftwo overs. Bryan had star one-day batsman Michael Bevan caught behind for one and clean bowled all-rounder Shane Lee for five.

And when captain Brian Lara sent the crowd into raptures with his brilliant run-out of Darren Lehmann, it became obvious this was once again the West Indians' day.

Only Brendon Julian with a defiant 35 threatened to hold up the home victory.

The West Indies had been sent in to bat and opener Sherwin Campbell made a spirited 62, but after Lara was out for 16 and Jimmy Adams was run out for 30 they found it hard to impose themselves.

Damien Fleming took three for 41, Lee captured the vital wickets of Campbell and Lara and Shane Warne, back on duty, ended with 2-30.

The big blot for Australia was the concession of 35 extras, including 20 wides and six no balls.

The second match in the seven-match series will be played at the New Queen's Park Oval in Grenada on Wednesday.
