Savio basketball from today

The first floodlit Savio Open State-level basketball tournament for junior boys and girls (born on or after 1-1-81) will be held at the Don Bosco High School court from April 13 to 21. The matches will be played on a knock-out-cum-league basis. Four teams in both junior boys and girls will qualify for the round-robin semi-final league to determine the winner and runner-up.

Ambrose adjudged best

Curtly Ambrose was adjudged the BPL Player of the Week for the period April 2 to 8. He will be presented US $ 500. It was difficult for the judges to select the winner this week due to even performances by the players in matches all over. But eventually Curtly Ambrose was chosen for his 8-wicket haul in the fourth Test against Australia in Antigua. The judges rated his performance ahead of Justin Langer's 127 and Lara's 100, both in the same Test, and Ijaz Ahmed's 137 against England in Sharjah.

Bipin camp inaugurated

Former Ranji Trophy player andSales Manager of IOC, Saleem Ahmed, today inaugurated the 13th annual camp of the Bipin Memorial football free coaching camp, co-sponsored by IOC, at the Worli Sports Club ground, Adarshnagar. About 600 boys and girls trainees from six centres viz. Borivali, Malad, Santa Cruz (W), Kalina, Parel and Worli were present.

Coaches: Olympian SS Babu Narayan, Internationals Balkrishnan, Arthur Pereira, Timothy Pereira, Kosalraman, Francis Fernandes and Ratnakar Shetty. National-level players Shrinivas Salian, Tejpal Salian, Harish Rao, Johnny Barretto, Abito Pires alongwith Damodar Kuckian, Agnelo D'Souza, Wilfred Pereira, Tony Rodrigues, Charlie Padwal, Camillo Mendes, Elvis D'Souza, Francis Fernandes, Purshottam Bangera, Shabbir Ansari and Suresh Rao will coach at various centres.

The centres are: Borivli Borsapada ground, Kalina Indian Airlines ground, Malad Mitchowki ground, Santacruz Sacred Heart School ground, Parel St Xavier's ground and Worli Adarshnagar sports ground.

Camp Notes

TheMatunga Gymkhana will be organising a coaching scheme for students in badminton, table tennis, cricket, tennis and skating. For details contact Jaysinh M Ashar at the Matunga Gymkhana Office on tel: 414 3828/418 9296 between 8.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

Etambe, Nirmala top-seeded

Nagsen Etambe (BoI) and P Nirmala (LIC) have been top-seeded in the Open and women's singles, respectively, of the fourth Mayor Cup carrom tournament, which begins on April 15 at the Mumbai Mahanagar Palika Kreed Bhavan, CST, Azad maidan.

Open singles: 1 Nagsen Etambe (BoI), 2 Narsingrao Sakar (BSES), 3 Mahendra Tambe (Bank of Maha.) and 4 Chakor Salve (MM Corp).
