MCA summer camp to assume more significance

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Only players from the camp would be called for Shatkar, Sportstar Trophy events
MUMBAI, APRIL 12: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) annual summer camp holds significance this season as only those players attending the camp would be eligible for the selection trials for under-14, under-16 Shatkar Trophy and under-19 Sportstar Trophy tournaments.

In all there would be 31 camp centres spread across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai for all three age groups. The camp would commence at these centres from April 15 and conclude on May 25.

``The opening two days at each centre would be devoted for selection trials in which 20 players would be picked,'' informed Professor Ratnakar Shetty while speaking to The Indian Express this evening. ``After the conclusion of the camp, 20 players from each age group would be shortlisted.

Simultaneously, a one-month special camp for those who had represented Mumbai in the three age groups last season (1998-99) would be held at the Wankhede Stadium under thesupervision of the MCA coaches. Thus, after the camp ends, there would be a pool of players in each age group, who would partake in tournaments (Shatkar and Sportstar) that form the basis for selecting the Mumbai teams,'' he said.

``The new concept, mooted by the coaches' committee and ratified by the MCA managing committee, would be put to use on a trial basis for this season,'' Shetty informed. ``In the past, when the selection trials were held for the Shatkar and Sportstar Trophy tournaments, there used to be a huge turnout, making the job of the selectors difficult.''

Interestingly, MCA's latest venture may have its positive aspects but the manner in which it has been undertaken has raised quite a few eyebrows in the local cricketing circles. The moot question being asked is that when the MCA has a Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) comprising the likes of Polly Umrigar, Ajit Wadekar, Sandeep Patil, Sudhir Naik, Milind Rege and Chandrakant Pandit for the implementation of new concepts to reviveMumbai's past glory, why do they have to seek advice from a different quarter without consulting the CIC ?
