President sees the numbers -- Sonia, 272; BJP, 270
Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav made a last-ditch attempt to stall the formation of a Sonia-led minority government by floating the name of West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu as an alternative Prime Minister.

Sonia to submit letters of support by Friday
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi yesterday told President K R Narayanan that she was willing to form a minority government with outside support from other parties adding up to 272 Lok Sabha MPs.

Worried President tells PM to see the Budget through
Aware that a new government cannot be installed unless the Budget is passed, the BJP and its allies yesterday blocked proceedings in the Lok Sabha with the result that the Union Budget could not be passed.
