MUMBAI, MAY 8: A daring late burst by Satara captain Mithila Gujar first pushed the match into extra-time, and then won her team an entry into the junior girls final, at the expense of Nagpur. The defending champions won 51-48 after the game was tied 44-44 in regulation time, to set up a title clash with Mumbai South-East in the State Junior basketball championships at Fr. Agnel Complex today.Mumbai South-East drubbed Thane 49-8 in the other semis. thane were ill at ease in the absence indisposed Gayatri Manolikar.
In the Nagpur-Satara game fortunes swung either direction till Satara thrived in a bright spell which gave them a 35-28 lead. The introduction of Ruchi Pandey spurred Nagpur scoring -- in the form of three 3-point plays -- as the lead swung Nagpur way, 44-39. Satara were in foul trouble and Nagpur earned eight free-throws on trot. But they failed to convert any. Nagpur also enjoyed a height advantage and control over the boards in Snehashree Desai, but she failed to deliver in convertingeither the pivots or the offensive rebounds. The Nagpur coach AS Garud also erred in not utlising the full 30 seconds in the dying moments, even as his team enjoyed a 2-point lead.
With 11 seconds left, the ball turned over and Mithila drained the equaliser. Ruchi failed to convert two free throws and the match went into extra time. Mithila again produced a three-pointer and a jumper to settle the issue Satara's way.
