Four die in collisions on the highway

PUNE, MAY 17: Four persons, including the wife of an auditor posted at the irrigation department's office at Navi Mumbai, were killed on the spot and eight seriously injured in two separate mishaps which took place between Khadki and Dehu Road on the Pune-Mumbai Highway in the wee hours of Monday.Two persons were killed on the spot and two injured when a truck collided head-on with their jeep near Khadki railway station. Among those killed was Pushpa Hange (46), the wife of an auditor posted at irrigation department's office at Konkan Bhavan in Navi Mumbai.

Another deceased was identifed as jeep driver Tukaram from Osmanabad. Pushpa's husband Baburao (52) and son Ananta (30) were seriously injured. They have been admitted to the Sassoon hospital.

The Hanges' were returning to Navi Mumbai after a vacation at their native place in Osmanabad district when the mishap took place. Police said the truck driver was overtaking other vehicle dangerously when the accident took place. He fled after the mishap.

Two persons were killed on the spot and six injured when a tempo carrying chicken collided-head on with a taxi at Dehu Road. The deceased were identified as Eknath Shinde (50) of Powai in Mumbai and taxi driver Bansi T Andhare from Beed. Police said the Pathare and Shinde families were returning to Mumbai from Marathwada when the mishap occured.

The taxi was badly mangled. Seventy chicken being transported in tempo were killed as the vehicle upturned, Dehu Road police said.
