Consolation victory for defending champions

Associated Press
SOUTHAMPTON, May 30: Sri Lanka finished their dismal World Cup campaign on a winning note, beating Kenya by 45 runs today. Despite half centuries by Maurice Odumbe(81) and A Vadher (71 not out), the winless Kenya could manage only 230.

Earlier, after being sent into bat, Sri Lanka posted a strong 275 foe eight, thanks to a 104-run partnership between Marvan Atapattu and skipper Arjuna Ranatunga.

Openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama got the 1996 champions away to a good start of 72 before Thomas Odoyo struck back with two quick wickets.Ranatunga belted 50 before he was run out in the 40th over. Atapattu hit 52 before falling to Angara. Kenya's reply was delayed by rain which began during the latter stages of the Sri Lanka innings.
