JAIPUR, JUNE 5: The Rajasthan Congress here today resolved to put the issue of according an OBC status to the Jat community on the backburner to avoid alienating any section on this count.
A meeting of state party office-bearers, chaired by president Girija Vyas, held the Congress had to tread cautiously considering its stakes on the matter. Sources said Vyas underlined the fact that the Opposition BJP was waiting in the wings to seize upon any opportunity to take advantage on this score. She called upon the office-bearers to propagate the line that the Congress was in the favour of giving reservations to Jats, Bishnois and some other caste-groups by including them in the OBC category, but it had to adopt the constitutional procedure.
The Supreme Court had made it mandatory for each state to set up a commission to determine backward castes and give reservations only on the basis of its recommendations. This would ease the tension which had, of late, built up among some caste groups.
