Umpires' relief over stumps

LONDON: Umpires are happy that they have been spared the responsibility of safeguarding the camera stump -- worth pounds 5,000 (about Rs 3.5 lakh) -- from rampaging fans.

In the past, umpires had to guard them with their lives during post-match pitch invasions. West Indian John Holder was once knocked to the ground and there have been numerous failed attempts to snatch the electronic timber.

Srinath faster

LONDON: The speed gun which was unveiled on Saturday during the first match of the Super Six revealed some interesting statistics. While won Javagal Srinath may have won his personal battle against Glenn McGrath, the Aussie was far deadlier in terms of real results.

  • Javagal Srinath was faster than Glenn McGrath. Srinath's fastest was 93 miles per hour against McGrath's 88 -- the delivery which removed Sachin Tendulkar for zero.

  • Srinath also worked up higher pace through his spells, averaging 86 miles an hour against McGrath's84.

    Other speedsters

  • Damien Fleming and Paul Reiffel were clocked at an identical at 86 mph

  • Venkatesh Prasad clocked 83 mph

  • Debashish Mohanty clocked 81 mph

    The Spinners

  • Anil Kumble's fastest was 73 mph, just three miles slower than seamer Steve Waugh

  • Kumble averaged 60 mph to Shane Warne's 51 mph
