Matralaya staff to protest non-payment of allowance

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

MUMBAI, JUNE 8: Government employees at Mantralaya are once again in a mood to protest; now, over the non-payment of the dearness allowance since January 1999. The Mantralaya Karmachari Sanghatana (MKS) will stage a demonstration outside the Mantralaya on Wednesday to register its protest.

MKS general secretary Ramdas Padwal, in a press release issued here on Tuesday, condemned the State government for failing to keep its promise to implement the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission with certain changes accepted by the employees.

``The Chief Minister has announced that government employees will not get any allowance due to the State policy of cutting down expenditure. Moreover, the dearness allowance (DA) given to the employees has also been freezed till January 2000. But the DA, which is based on the inflation index, must be paid to the employees. If the government fails to pay the DA and arrears for 14 months, the employees will have no option but to launch an agitation,'' said Padwal.

Hundredsof employees will gather outside the Mantralaya on Wednesday at 1.30 pm to stage demonstrations, he said, adding that the agitation would be intensified if the government failed to pay the dues.
