Driving at night? Don't stop, muggers around

NEW DELHI, June 18: The next time you find yourself driving down a lonely road at 12.30 a.m and you hear the call of nature don't listen. Keep driving till you reach home. If you don't, you could be mugged.

Raghunath Sharma, a resident of Vasant Kunj, was driving home from Mandi Village around 12.30 a.m. on Thursday night. He has a mining business at Mandi and on his way home last night, he stopped near Jaunpur in Mehrauli.

Sharma stepped out of the car to relieve himself. He reportedly noticed a Maruti car drive by, take a U-turn and come and park in front of his Esteem.

The police say the four men got out, forced Sharma into the Esteem and then drove on. They then stopped the car a little ahead, took Sharma's ring, cellphone and chain. The four then abandoned their car and Sharma on the road and took off in his Esteem.

A case of robbery has been registered at the Mehrauli Police Station. This and another robbery in Mehrauli have prompted Lieutenant Governor Vijai Kapoor to ask the police chief V.N. Singh to transfer the Station House Officer of Mehrauli, Surinder Kumar, with immediate effect. A spokesman for the Lt.Governor refused to comment on the issue saying that he was not aware of the reason for this decision.

In the second incident in Mehrali, two unidentified persons stabbed a bus conductor and fled with his bag containing tickets. The DTC bus was heading towards Mehrauli, after its passengers had alighted. The police have registered a case of robbery.
