On a free run, dacoits lay 19 people low at Shirur

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, June 18: As many as 19 people were injured when dacoits struck at Shirur on Thursday night. This comes just two days after dacoits struck at four different places in the city, seriously injuring two women and stealing valuables worth Rs 44,000. According to the police, the dacoits, armed with swords and spears, broke into three houses and attacked the occupants and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 34,000.

Maruti Tukaram Bhandari was sleeping in his house when the dacoits broke into his house and attacked him and his wife. Despite pleas from Bhandari that he would give them his valuables, the dacoits attacked him and his wife and injured them.

The dacoits moved into the neighbouring house of Raghunath Raosaheb Chavan and attacked him and his family. Similarly, Rukmini Govind Gawde's family was also attacked and their valuables taken away.

Eyewitnesses who were alerted by the noise saw around eight to 10 people escape. Two police constables gave chase to the dacoits but could not apprehend them. According to the victims, the dacoits had masked their faces.

Last week, a similar attack had occurred on some houses in Manchar when dacoits had grievously attacked several families. The past few months have seen an alarming rise in dacoities. The mohalla committee set up by the Pune rural police proved to be ineffective in preventing such dacoities. Villagers complain that the committees are not well-equipped to handle such dacoities which further emboldens the attackers. In each case the dacoits were similarly dressed and armed and attacked their victims without any provocation.
