PUNE, JULY 5: Noted Marathi stage and film actor Vasant Shinde, reputed as king of comedy, was cremated today. Eighty-seven-year-old Shinde, who had acted in 225 films, over 100 dramas and 50 loknatyas, breathed his last at a private nursing home on Sunday night.Prominent personalities from the field of Marathi stage, films, literature, arts as well as some politicians were present for the last rites. Among them were Chittaranjan Kolhatkar, Suryakant Mandhare, Leela Gandhi, Suhasini Deshpande, Keerti Shiledar, Usha Chavan, Mohan Kulkarni, writer of Shinde's biography Madhu Potdar, Ulhas Pawar, Charudatta Sarpotdar, Nana Rayrikar, Manohar Kulkarni of Manoranjan and Balasaheb Sarpotdar of Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal.
The funeral procession started from Shinde's residence in Kalanagari in the morning. Shinde's body was kept at the Tilak Smarak Mandir for some time to enable his fans to pay their last respects. Later, he was cremated at the Vaikuntha Crematorium.
Shinde, who had heart problems, was not keeping well for some time. He was hospitalised after he complained of breathing problem last night. Born at Bhandara in Ahmednagar district on May 14, 1912, Shinde started working in films in 1946.
Shinde had 50-year long acting career. While working in Hindustan Film Company, Dadasaheb Phalke gave him the break in Chaturthicha Chandra. He acted in three silent films including Ganesh Janma, Hanuman Janma and Bolki Tapeli. He had prominent roles in films Pedgaonche Shahane, Sangte Aika, Dhakti Soon, and Thapaddya.
He also acted in several plays including Lavani Bhulli Abhangala, Premsanyas, Bhawbandhan, Ram Joshi, Sakha Maza Mantri, Morcha Naach and Bilandar Gaon Kalandar.
The actor was conferred with several prestigious awards including the Shanta Hublikar Award, Balgandharva Award and Kalagaurav Award. His autobiography, Vinodvruksh, was published last month.
