150 buildings identified as hazardous in PCMC areas

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, JULY 11: About 150 old buildings in Pimpri-Chinchwad have been identified as hazardous, according to a survey conducted by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) recently.

City engineer S D Garade said that the PCMC would soon be issuing notices to the owners and tenants of the buildings to urgently carry out the necessary repairs. He, however, maintained that the nature of the hazard posed by the buildings was not serious to such an extent that any building would collapse suddenly. According to the survey, only some portions of the buildings posed a danger to the residents. The notices therefore will urge the residents to carry out the repairs, he said.

Most of the hazardous buildings are in the village areas. Some houses or portions of the residential buildings are mud constructions, Garade said. The survey was carried out on the directives of Municipal Commissioner B I Nagrale during a meeting held last month to discuss various civic problems. Mayor Madhukar Pawle had pointed out the necessity of carrying out the survey.

Garade said that most of the buildings in Pimpri-Chinchwad are comparatively new or constructed over the last 25 years. Even the chawls are not very hazardous as they are only single-storeyed and are maintained properly. There exits a two-storeyed building at Chinchwad chowk along the Mumbai-Pune highway which has been declared hazardous two years ago. There is no occupant in the building except at the ground floor where a lottery stall is located. The two-floors of the building resemble a chawl like construction and there is a danger of their sudden collapse, particularly during the monsoons. A notice board on the building warns people to keep away from the premises. However, several people ignore the warning and visit the lottery stall.
