National start with facile Victory

MUMBAI, July 11: A superb spell of left-arm spin bowling by Nilesh Kulkarni (six for 18) and an unbeaten 32 by opener Sameer Apte helped National beat Victory Cricket Club by ten wickets in the Dr HD Kanga League `A' Division today.

Heavy rains on Saturday evening delayed start of play at various venues. At Shivaji Park, Khar Gumkhana and MIG, Bandra, all matches were washed out without a ball being bowled.

The National-Victory tie at Police Gymkhana could begin only at 2 p.m., but ended swiftly, after Victory were bowled out for 42 in 30.1 overs. Amit Dani and Manish Patel shared the spoils with Kulkarni. National reached the target in just 6.5 overs.

In another low-scoring match, Young Maharashtra defeated MB Union by eight runs. MB Union were set to score 98 and were 60 for five at one stage before being dismissed for 89. Medium pacer Rahul Thakur, Vivek Narawane, C Padmanabhan and Kedar Hudlikar took two wickets each.

Matches washed out: Shivaji Park Gymkhana vs Karnatak SA; Khar Gymkhana vs PJ Hindu Gymkhana; MIG, Bandra vs Young Friends .

B Division: United Cricketers 76 (Sandesh Bandivdekar 33; Sudhakar Harmalkar 3-16, Vishal Mahadik 4-27) and 63-6 (Sudhakar Harmalkar 3-6) lost to Worli SC 77-6 decl. (Hemang Desai 4-25) on the first innings; Shantibhai Memorial 77 (Kamlesh Malvankar 37; Rohan Bane 6-14) lost to Sunder 87 (Jayesh Gawane 3-26, Sharad Shetty 3-14); Khandala 111-6 decl. (Mandar Nalawde 49, Ram Walanj 3-31) drew with Dahisar 22-2; Parsee Gymkhana 160-6 decl. (Sanjay Hadpi 60 n.o., S Mubarakai 35; Sunil Malik 3-46, Ajay Joshi 3-41) drew with Islam Gymkhana 35-2; Young Comrade 120 (Deepak Thakre 34; Prathamesh Athavale 5-41, Soham Jain 3-28) lost to Fort Vijay 121-1(Sudesh Nayak 55 n.o., Nilesh Bhurkhe 55 n.o.).
