NEW DELHI, JULY 11: Sachin Tendulkar struck two goals and Venkatesh Prasad three as the Indian cricket team beat a side comprising Hindi film stars 6-2 in a benefit tie at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to raise funds for the jawans who fell in Kargil.Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Defence Minister George Fernandes and Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan were among 25,000 fans assembled for the show put up by Sahara India group this evening.
Tendulkar scored the first and fourth goals as the cricketers led 5-0 at half-time before Navjot Sidhu made it 6-0. The celluloid heroes pumped in two late goals through Akshaye Khanna and Shahrukh Khan, who headed the ball in.
The Indian World Cup squad, barring skipper Mohammed Azharuddin, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath, were seen in action. The star eleven included Mithun Chakraborty, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan.
Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja also visited injured soldiers at a army hospital in the capital. Some of thesoldiers congratulated the players on beating Pakistan (in a Super Six tie at Old Trafford) in the World Cup in England. The other cricketers were Rahul Dravid, Robin Singh, Prasad, Debasis Mohanty, Ajit Agarkar and Nikhil Chopra.
