Indutai Tilak passes away

PUNE, July 15: Indutai Tilak, editor of Konkan Kesari and Sahyadri, and wife of former chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Jayantrao Tilak, passed away on Thursday morning. She was 74.

The grand daughter-in-law of Lokmanya Tilak, Indutai was never directly involved in politics, but a committed social worker who led a women's team during the Goa liberation movement and prepared meals for the activists. She wrote several books, poems and short stories on Lokmanya Tilak and about her hobby - the Japanese art of Origami and Ikebana, on which she was an expert. Indutai also held key posts in voluntary organisations like Sewasadan, Huzurpaga and the Anath Hindu Mahilashram.pThe concerns of the poor, needy and orphaned women were close to her heart.She had done her schooling from Pune's Huzurpaga and completed her BSc from Fergusson College after her marriage to Jayantrao Tilak.

Her mortal remains were consigned to flames this morning in the presence of a large gathering of family and well-wishers. She is survived by her husband and son Deepak, the trustee general manager of the Marathi daily Kesari.
