New Zealand Lord over England

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE

LONDON, JULY 25: New Zealand levelled the series against England today when they won the second Test at Lord's by nine wickets.

It was the Kiwis' first Test match success at the home of cricket and they now go to Old Trafford for the third Test on August 5 level at 1-1 in the four-match contest.

England will be without captain Nasser Hussain for that match after he missed the second innings at Lord's after breaking a finger.

In Hussain's absence England mustered just 229 in their second innings, setting New Zealand a paltry target of 58 to win.

Matthew Bell duly knocked off the runs to spark wild celebrations among the Kiwi contingent.

England, who had managed 186 in their first innings, to New Zealand's 358, had resumed on Sunday on 107 for four.

Aftab Habib and nightwatchman Dean Headley stubbornly defied New Zealand's attack for 40 minutes.

But the introduction of Geoff Allott into the attack from the pavilion end in the 11th over changed the course of the morning's play after he claimed twofor one in 13 balls as England slumped to 127 for six.

Headley was first to fall from Allott's sixth ball of the day, attempting to drive outside off-stump instead edging to Stephen Fleming at second slip.

Habib's 127-minute stay ended when he edged to third slip.

A seventh wicket stand of 78 between Chris Read and Andy Caddick defied the Kiwis before Nash broke the partnership.

Alan Mullally scored 10 before Roger Twose caught him off Chris Cairns and Caddick's brave effort was finally ended on 45 when Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming caught him off Allott, who finished with three for 36.

With nine wickets down and Hussain unable to bat England were all out and New Zealand's openers -- the two Matthews, Horne and Bell -- scored 15 of the 58 required in six overs before tea.
