Passport office opens in Surat city
A passport office has been set up in the city to facilitate documentation, though passports will continued to be issued from the divisional office at Ahmedabad. At a meeting at the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Divisional Passport officer G R Amre said emergency passports could be issued within three days, if all the required material is submitted.

Weapons banned
Additional District Magistrate R J Makadia has issued prohibitory orders banning the carrying of weapons from August 15 in view of the imminent Lok Sabha elections.

Takes charge
Amarish Patel has taken charge of the Vyara division as Deputy Conservator of Forests. He was in charge of the wood workshop and botanical garden at Waghai prior to this.

SSC results
Surat district has scored 39.59 per cent result in the Secondary School Certificate supplementary examination held in July 1999. Out of the 4,389 students who appeared for the supplementary examination, 1,738 cleared it. Seven students were caught cheating.

Appointed
Surat district Congress Maldhari Cell convener Tulsibhai Desai has appointed Jagubhai Rabari as convener of the Mahuva taluka Congress Maldhari cell. Prakash Ahir and Vanaa Ahir have been appointed joint conveners, while Vinod Rabari and Janak Rabari have been appointed general secretary and organising secretary respectively.

Inaugurated
The inauguration ceremony of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme (an international award for young people) was held at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan's Nand Vidya Niketan recently. Andre Morris, chairperson of the international award authority, India, (west zone) was the chief guest at the function.

Judgement today
Vadodara:
The judgment in a contempt case lodged against the VMC is likely to be delivered on Tuesday.
