SAI trials on August 11

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Aug 2: The Northern Regional Centre of Sports Authority of India will select 10 to 15 girls on August 11 under the SAI Day-Boarding scheme. Announcing this here today, Director-Incharge Suresh Harmilapi of the regional centre, said that the talented girls would be selected in athletics, baskeball, hockey and volleyball. The selected girls would be put under the charge of SAI coaches posted at Sector 18 SAI Hostel.

The trainees will be given diet money and playing kits besides scientific training. The SAI has also decided to `adopt' day-boarding schools in Chandigarh.

Giving details of the activities in the region, Harmilapi said recently the SAI and Himachal Sports Department conducted a joint inspection of Mandi to start sports activities under the SAI Special Area Games scheme. A proposal is being mooted to start athletic and football centres in Sundernagar.

Hamirpur was also considered for shooting. A shooting range, 12 km from Hamirpur was proposed for shooting activities. However, this site was rejected as it was not feasible for the shooters to travel 12 km daily for practice. The Himachal Sports Department would suggest a new location for shooting centre.

The Himachal Pradesh is conducting a sports festival in Lahul and Spiti from August 14 to 19. The Sports Authority of India will send its team to spot talent in archery.
