VADODARA, Aug 10: Students of the M S University's Faculty of Engineering and Technology stayed away from classes even on Tuesday in protest against the absence of teachers in several departments.
While at the department of Electrical Engineering, one professor has been posted for duty at the Centralised Admission Committee (CAC) at Ahmedabad, a lecturer is reported to be on leave and two other lecturers have also not been able to take their lectures.
The story has been the same at the department of Computer Studies also. ``There is a need for more teachers in this department,'' admits the Faculty dean S G Shah. He adds that the department has five teachers, but needs five more on a permanent basis for proper functioning.
``We have advertised for the vacancies but are yet to get any response. The classes, however, would swing back to normal from Wednesday,'' claims the dean.
He added that there have been two applicants and the faculty was still to come to any decision about recruiting more teachers.
The faculty's students, however, say that as long as there was no permanent solution, it would be difficult for both teachers and students to keep up with the frequent changeovers.
``It has been almost two weeks now that the schedule has been disturbed in such a manner,'' said a student of the faculty. Several student union leaders have also made their representations to the Vice-Chancellor of MSU Anil Kane on Tuesday demanding some solution as early as possible. While the members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad have said that such a schedule would affect the career of the students in the long run, the members of National Students Union of India (NSUI) have said that they would prolong the agitation.
Deans of several faculties met with the V-C on Tuesday to resolve the problem, which exists in several faculties. The deans have been told that classes should continue despite the vacancies and it should not affect the students' academic schedules.
