PUNE, Sept 3: Hectic but lacklustre campaigning dominated by drought-like conditions in Solapur, Pandharpur and Sangli Lok Sabha constituencies and its 21 Assembly segments going for polls on Sunday in the first phase of the battle of the ballot ended this evening.
The police machinery and administration in both the districts has geared up fully for peaceful, free and fair conduct of the millennium elections.
The campainging, spread over about three weeks was a lacklustre affair, which remained confined to padyatras, street-corner meetings, group meetings, and rallies. Even as many a rural constituencies seen unmarked jeeps tucked with amplifiers roaming around, the loud-speaker nuisance in the towns was considerably curtailed thanks to the model code of conduct of the election commission.
Necessary security arrangements have been made in all these constituencies. Apart from state police personnel, additional staff from the Home Guards, Civil Defence, and the NCC cadets will be deployed to maintain law and order situation in the State.
