Bhupathi confirms top billing
Mahesh Bhupathi underlined his status as one of the world's best tennis players in the paired event when he won the mixed doubles title with Ai Sugiyama (Japan) in the millennium's final Grand Slam event. The second-seeded pair beat the American combination of Donald Johnson and Kimberly Po 6-4, 6-4 in the final.

Amritinder loses
In a stunning turnaround, Feroz Ali of Calcutta, the '98 Indian Open winner, not only made up a five-stroke deficit but also snatched an exciting victory over overnight leader Amritinder Singh (Chandigarh) in a play-off to emerge triumphant in the Rs 7.5 lakhs Color Plus Open golf tournament today. Feroz and Amritinder finished with a four-round total of four-under 276 leading to the play-off.

Martin in semis
Todd Martin didn't need smelling salts this time. That doesn't mean the American's 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the U.S. Open quarterfinals over lightly regarded longshot Slava Dosedel was easy last night. Dosedel, a Czech ranked no. 95 in the world before the Open, gave Martin a battle, stretching the match to four sets and avoiding two match points before going down.

Aussies down
Australia were staring at certain defeat reeling at 89 for six in their second innings after both skipper Steve Waugh and paceman Jason Gillespie suffered fractures in a horrible on-field collision on the second day of the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka today. Sri Lanka, overnight 69 for two in their first innings after skittling out the visitors for 188, were bowled out for 234, but Australia were just 43 runs ahead following another batting collapse.

Risky catch
Who said India don't have a wicketkeeper who can't bat in one-dayers? Well, he can bat, and get a hundred too, as he did in the Singapore Challenge final. That is, if the selectors want Rahul Dravid to really fit in this category and are convinced he can do justice to both. The question then will be: How long?
