Loyola claim U-14 crown; Ness Wadia cruise

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, SEPT 15: St Vincent's showed great spirit, coming back not just once but twice, to beat Gautam Public School (Nagar) 3-2 and claim the under-17 boys divisional Multi Games football final at the SSPMS Ground today.

Gautam Public School were made to rest content in the under 14 final as well, losing to Loyola's 1-2 in yet another taut final of a busy day.

By contrast, the under-19 boys final ended 8-0 in favour of Ness Wadia who scored a runaway win over Solapur's Sanmeshar College.

Another one-sided victory saw Hutatma K beat Nagar's Convent School AN 7-0 in the girls under-19 final.

St Vincent's coach Desmond Sagar attributed attributed his team's success to his boys fighting spirit in general but singled out splendid goalkeeping by Shyam Pednekar and rock-like defence by Lincoln Dias.

The final began dramatically when the visitors Gautam shot into the lead in the very first minute through Mahesh Jamdade.

But that only brought off the best in Sagar's boys as the coach was to comment: ``The team played as though possessed. Our forward line began to click very well and I knew it was only matter of time before we came back into the game.''

That Vincent's did. Shane Pereira grabbed a through ball, cut past a defender and slotted past the goalkeeper to equalise. But the Vincent's found themselves having to come back again.

Jamdade scored his second goal after half-time -- exploiting a cross from the right like the first goal. Vincent's, though, did not give in.

A well converted free-kick restored parity and it was Bhushan Bruno, the centre-forward, amid the wall, who deflected to Lazurus Siddene to blast home.

Bhushan, befittingly scored the match-winner, heading home from Eric Anthony's cross from the right with just five minutes remaining to seal a rousing contest.

Goals by Karan Katiyar and Vidit Tiwar made for Loyola's victory in the under-14 final. Nitin Thombre was Gautam's scorer.
