KATHMANDU, SEPT 26: PT Usha (11.45) produced some of the old form but only for a silver as Sri Lanka's Damayanthi Darsha won the women's 100m final in the South Asian Federation Games Athletics events.Saraswati Dey took the bronze in 11.75. Darsha's time of 11.19 is her personal best. Anil Kumar underlined his presence as the fastest man in South Asia racing to 100m gold in 10.37 secs, a new SAF mark. India made it 1-2 in the event as C Thirunanadurai took silver in 10.42 secs.
On the medals tally front, India won 3 gold medals, seven in athletics and six in swimming.
India's gold medals in athletics came in 800 metres from K Beenamol, men's and women's shot put, women's marathon, men's high-jump and 3000 metres steeplechase. Beenamol pipped Rosa Kutty for the gold. In shot put, Bahadur Singh (19.15m) and Surenderjit Kaur (15.52) bettering SAF records.
CLEAN SWEEP: Swimmers made a clean sweep of all the six gold medals with five new Games marks to boot on the opening day.
Nisha Milletfigured in a grand record double along with Zeba Wadia, winning the 100 metres freestyle before anchoring the 4x100 metres relay squad. In the men's section, Syed Hakimuddin (200m freestyle), Deepak Singh (100m breaststroke) and Kailash Nath (the 400m IM) were the winners. Zeba Wadia (200m breast) and the Indian relay quartet won the relay in style.
