Diamond Jubilee School agrees to renew bus service

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, OCT 3: It was sweet victory for the 300 agitating parents of students from Diamond Jubilee High School for Boys at Mazgaon (EN, Sept 3) who were protesting against the school's decision to terminate bus services. On Friday, the school management agreed to renew the service again, said one parent, Humera Memon.

The school has been run by Agha Khan Education Service (AKES) since the eighties, a trust that also runs schools the world over.

Earlier, the school management was adamant about sticking to its decision, citing the reason of unnecessary investment in terms of time and staff for something the school is not bound to do. They also maintained that the parents were warned two months in advance of the termination. The parents, however, claimed that it was actually the bus service provided by the school that had prompted them to seek admission for their children here.

However as Memon pointed out, the parents are also protesting against the monthly activity fee of Rs 75 charged in the primarysection and a yearly incidental charge of Rs 500 charged in the aided secondary section.

In another development, Dr S Radhakrishnan Vidyalaya, Malad (EN, Sept 22) has just completed the formalities for the formation of Parents Teachers Association (PTA) for the primary section. The school, founded five years ago, was recently in the news following a hike in its fees without the approval of the education department.
