AHMEDABAD, Oct 3: In elections, it's not only candidates and parties that win and lose. Those who bet on their prospects await poll results as eagerly as those who have contested the battle for the ballot. And if the satta market barometer is anything to go by, then the BJP is in for some disappointment in the State. It is expected to lose around four parliamentary seats in the State compared to what it had won in the Lok Sabha elections in 1998.At the close of market on Saturday night, rates were fluctuating for the Vadodara and Rajkot seats. Congress candidate Urmilaben Patel, who had been a favourite about 10 days ago, was at a disadvantage on Saturday. Her rate was 35 paise against Jayaben's 30 (the candidate whose rate is higher has a lower chance of winning).
In Rajkot, the BJP is favourite at present though the rates keep changing. The rates which were earlier 35-40 in favour of Vallabh Radhadiya against Vallabh Kathiriya are now 20-24 in Kathiriya's favour.
In Anand, Banaskantha, Jamnagar and Bulsar, the bookies are predicting a neck-to-neck fight while there are hardly any takers for the Bharuch, Porbander, Amreli and Bhavnagar parliamentary seats. But bookies feel that rates in Anand (90-90 for BJP and Congress), Banaskantha (85-85), Jamnagar (70-70) and Bulsar (50-50) are likely to show a clear tilt in a couple of days. They feel the picture is likely to get clear by Monday in these four seats which are at present showing a tight finish.
However, the bookies are giving a clear victory to the BJP's L K Advani in Gandhinagar and Kashiram Rana in Surat and the Congress' Shankersinh Vaghela in Kapadwanj, Dinsha Patel in Nadiad, Shantilal Patel in Godhra. Those who want to bet on these seats have to enter in a bid with the bookies. For instance, the rate for Advani's victory starts from six paise and if one wants to gamble, he has to bet on his defeat.
Similarly, the rate for Vaghela is 10 paise, Dinsha is eight paise, Shantilal is eight and Kashiram Rana is five paise.
The bookies predict a victory for the BJP in Ahmedabad where Harin Pathak has a rate of 15 paise against Dani's 18 paise. Similarly, in Mehsana A K Patel has a rate of 33 paise against the 38 of Atmaram Patel. In Sabarkantha, BJP candidate Kanubhai Patel has a rate of 40 paise against Nishaben Chaudhary of Congress who has a rate of 45 paise. In Patan, the BJP's Mahesh Kanodia has a rate of 20 paise against Pravin Rashtrapal's 24. In Junagadh, Bhavnaben Chikhaliya of the BJP has a rate of 25 against the 30 paise of Pethalji Chavda. In Dhandhuka, Ratilal Verma has a rate of 45 paise against the 50 of Manubhai Parmar.
Congress candidates are in the lead in Surendranagar where Savsingh Makwana has rate of 85 paise against 105 paise of Bhavnaben Dave. Similarly, in Mandvi Chitu Gamit has a rate of 70 against the 75 of Mansinh Patel. In Kutch, Babubhai Meghji Shah has a rate of 56 paise against 48 paise of Pushpadhan Gadhvi.
In Dahod, Somji Damor has a rate of 55 paise against 60 paise of Babubhai Katara. In Chhota Udepur, Congress candidate Naran Rathwa has a rate of 60 paise against 72 of Ramsinh Rathwa.Interestingly, the rate for BJP winning 14 seats is 10 paise, followed by 16 paise for 15 seats and 45 paise for 16 seats. The rates then witness a sharp increase after 16 seats. The rate for BJP getting 17 seats is 150 paise and that for 18 seats is 280 paise.
Nationally, the rate for Congress getting more than 150 seats is 165 to 185 paise, while for the BJP getting nearly 175 seats, the rate is 52 paise. The rate for the BJP getting over 225 seats is 480 paise. In Bellary, Congress candidate Sonia Gandhi has a rate of 42 paise against the rate of 47 for Sushma Swaraj.
