First loss for Salgaocar

MARGAO: Salgaocar goalkeeper Raghuvir Khanolkar's error in the 56th minute helped Churchill Brothers win 1-0 in the Director's Special Goa Professional Football league at the Nehru Stadium on Sunday.

Khanolkar charged forward when Churchill medio Mario Soares lobbed the ball into the box, but failed to grab the ball, which deflected off defender Osumanu Husseni and went to striker Francis Silveira to find the net.

Hurdles for Nitin

NEW DELHI: Defending champion Nitin Kirtane's will find it difficult to retain his title. He drew double-junior National champion Kamala Kannan in the first round of the National Hardcourt Tennis Championships that gets under way from Monday. Seventh seed Mustafa Ghouse and fifth seeded former champion Vasudeva Reddy could also pose hurdles to the Pune left-hander as the experienced duo are also in the top half.

Varsha tops

MUMBAI: Varsha Majumdar defeated Judith Walia 4-2 in the final of the CCI Ladies snooker tournament at CCI. Varsha won 61-25, 40-29, 58-62, 54-72, 47-16, 54-42 to pocket Rs 12,000.
